Bulletproof vests weren’t invented by the army, or even the police. They’re the result of a brainwave by a beleaguered pizza delivery man in 1969. After being shot twice by while making a delivery in a rough part of Detroit, former Marine Richard Davis started thinking about a way to give people, particularly police officers who found themselves in the same situation, a second chance. With a roll of nylon and the straps from his car’s seat belts he set about creating his first design for body armour that could be concealed beneath clothes. Richard toured police stations shooting himself in the chest as a demonstration. He later switched to a design using Kevlar, which is 230% stronger than the nylon he originally used.

Bull. Armor has been around for a LONG time. Before the Kevlar vest was the Flak vest, which was standard equipment by our airmen in WW2. This is before 1969.
ReplyDeleteBefore Flak vests, there was plate armor. You will note many real plate armor suits have a ding in them. That's called a "proof mark". Nobles were concerned about being shot by muskets. The armor maker would shoot the armor with a musket (making the ding) as "proof" that the armor would protect the wearer from bullets and balls. That was a B.S. test, as you could shoot a ball from a musket with a very light powder load, but plate armor WAS effective.
No bulletproof vests have been around for a lot longer than this Detroit delivery guy.
Vintage armor and bullet proof vests are totally different. Duh.
